Kerry served in Viet Nam, Bush served in the Texas National Guard. Kerry became a lawyer, Bush got an MBA. Kerry pursued a career in public service. Bush is said to have failed in the private sector. Kerry was an Assistant District Attorney, a Lieutenant Governor, and then, a US Senator for 19 years. Bush became Governor for 6 years, dismantled some of his predecessor's accomplishments, bankrupt the state treasury and reversed pollution standards. Houston became the smog capital of the country.
Am I biased? You bet! Every time Bush, or a surrogate, or the media question some of Kerry's votes or quotes in his career, I say "Where was George?" When George W. Bush says that Kerry's record in the Senate does not include a lot of signature legislation, I say "So what were your stellar accomplishments during the same period?" All of a sudden, the room gets quiet. I do not say we shouldn't take a critical look at Senator Kerry's record, but I understand that it is nearly impossible to take a critical a look at George W Bush's accomplishments, especially prior to his becoming Governor. I also say this election is in part a referendum on the policies of his Administration. We should be taking a more critical look at those policies, instead of speculating about events that happened 35 years ago.
